Arrowleaf Buckwheat

(16-18″ tall x 24-30″ wide) Arrowleaf Buckwheat (Eriogonum compositum) is an uncommon native species from the dry areas of the Pacific Northwest, known for its large butterfly-attracting flowers and value to pollinators and beneficial insects. In the garden, the large triangular leaves grow in a low, compact mat and push up tall flower spikes in late spring. A tough and resilient perennial with a deep taproot, Arrowleaf Buckwheat produces large seeds that are an important food source for songbirds and many other small seed-eating animals. The plant likes well-drained soils and full sun. Recommended spring blooming companion plants include English Lavender, blue-flowered Penstemon (Beardtongue) and Calylophus (Sundrops).
