Bouteloua x ‘Zig Zag’ (Blue Grama Grass) blooms with a profusion of horizontal eyebrow-like flowers in mid-summer. The flowers ripen to a light tan color, curl upward on the flower spike, and hold on the plant through winter, providing months of flowers and seed heads. Discovered by High Country Gardens Chief Horticulturist, David Salman, growing in Santa Fe, NM.
Description
This High Country Gardens grama grass selection will be the star of your summer garden. Bouteloua x ‘Zig Zag’, a cross between B. gracilis and B. hirsuta, was discovered by High Country Gardens Chief Horticulturist, David Salman, growing in Santa Fe, NM. With a compact form, this low-maintenance grass is ideal for mass planting and small space gardens. This is a xeric native selection that grows in hot sites with poor sandy, rocky, or loam soil. ‘Zig Zag’ is recommended for gardens west of the Mississippi and climates that receive 20” or less of rain and snow each year, and is suitable for high elevations above 7,000 feet. It’s a fantastic, long-lived perennial to complement all types of perennials and other ornamental grasses, including Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium), Ratibida (Prairie Coneflower), and native bush sages (Salvia).
